Surprise Poem
I apologize for running.
It is out of habit you see.
So used to getting bit by snakes in the tall grass.
Any movement sends me running for protection.
Looking for anti venom before the bite even happens.
Following a pattern that does not always hold true.
***
I know you just want to surprise me.
Introduce something good into my life.
I just cannot face it.
Please be gentle with me.
I will come around eventually.
Just let me get a safe distance away first.
***
You do not have to apologize for running.
I know you have been through worse and new experiences are terrifying.
That you are already at a limit.
You do not have to tell me that space for the new is limited.
The old hard to throw out to make room.
Some things just do not fit through that doorway.
***
I just want to surprise you.
Show you the care that I feel.
I pray that you stop jumping at every one.
I will never be a snake in the grass,
But I will be patient.
You will figure out the space eventually.
