Abyss Poem

We travel down that road.

Under the secret of night.

Away from the eyes of the sun.

Heading to a place we must reach safely.

Who can know if it is home or the unknown.

Just a place to make new experiences either way.

***

We travel through the abyss.

Reality falling away just past the edge of the road.

Fog a secret cover obscuring the brightest light.

Moon not even braving the place where the sun long fled.

Road slick with the tears from it.

A surreal landscape where anything could lurk out of sight.

***

Cars race to and fro.

Chasing after shadows they seem to see in the taillights of others but never their own.

Efficient, vicious, and treading the thin line between life and death.

Stretched out in lines like the veins of a giant.

One cell might fall but more will quickly follow.

The lifeblood must continue to flow.

***

You and I are all that truly exist out in the abyss.

Your quiet comments barely heard above the road noise.

Staticky music echoing on the radio.

Even it has trouble navigating these hills.

The painted white lines a bullseye in the dark.

Completely separate and alone.

***

Why do you travel through the abyss?

Each car probably has a different answer.

Reasons, explanations and excuses.

Painted in the dark of the night and blinding white of the road.

Mine is simply because you are here.

We exist in this abyss alone.
