Stars Afar Poem

I look to the bright sky just out of reach.

Lilac galaxies glitter like fine jewels scattered on ashen cloth.

Shifting slowly with the light as we move.

Common as sand but far more precious.

All the more valuable for being unobtainable.

Diamonds kept under bulletproof glass.

***

Most people see the universe and feel small.

I see it as a love letter to humanity.

Though, we cannot touch it, we are the only ones permitted to gaze upon it.

Beauty we can enjoy at any time by looking up.

Even the mind’s eye can see it instinctually.

I never have to look through a telescope to see the glow for it belongs to me.

***

Do you know that they belong to you as well?

Collected in the palm like early morning dew drops.

Left to scatter where they fell.

Names only assigned by the observer.

Identities that reflect humanity more than celestial bodies.

A blessing given freely.

***

It belongs to us because it is a mirror.

Dark, light, and color from an internal universe just as rich.

Holding everything that exists in reality and more.

Just as far away but not impossible.

How blessed are those that can see the similarities.

Knowing that both those glittering lights and dreams are stars afar.
