Anticipation Poem

Anticipation broadens life.
Stretches out those crystal moments before a good thing.
Writing an experience to memory like pen to high quality paper.
Moments of asking “what if?” and “how?”.
Times that will never rise to quite the same heights.
The extremes kept and all else lost to time.
***
The taste of a delicious meal or sweet treat.
Waiting for the preparation to be completed.
Staring at it through a clear display case like a piece of fine art.
Debating whether or not to risk skin and comfort or wait for it to cool down.
Forced to enjoy all the aesthetics of the thing.
The memory given just that more time to engrave.
***
The expected trip.
Morning air feeling like it is vibrating in response to what is about to come.
Having to wait as the house is closed completely in preparation.
Preplanning a love letter for what is hoped to occur.
Seeing the house fade in the review mirror.
Asking “are we there yet?” when you can no longer contain the feeling to yourself.
***
Success when the final step has been accomplished.
The send button pressed with a click.
The rush of hearing the applause from others.
Being told that a job was well done.
The knowledge that a purpose was achieved.
The warm calm that made all the anticipation worth it.
