Ongoing Medical Mystery

It all started with a blood test. I got a routine full blood panel done because of past issues. Everything looked fine except one result: my d dimer came back elevated at 0.7. Those that have had similar results would probably know how bad that is. It’s an indication of a high probability of blood clots and chance of pulmonary embolism. That sounds scary yes and it’s even scarier considering that I’ve had issues with blood clots before from being in a wheelchair.
That experience of having blood clots was more painful than I can properly describe.
Lucky (or unlucky) for me, I’ve been too emotionally drained to have the bandwidth to be afraid. My doctor scheduled an urgent ultrasound this morning to check for blood clots. I fully expected them to find something but was not nervous.

I sat in a dimly lit room as my legs were scanned with ultrasound. They would locate a valve and push hard to take a clear picture. If it wasn’t for the painful pushing, I might have fallen asleep. Soft music filled the air and a starry sky was projected on the ceiling. They also allowed me to stay in my wheelchair instead of being moved to a table which I appreciated. Technician was very kind and professional and I was done after awhile.
You can imagine how I felt when she said that everything looked good. The doctor hours later also confirmed everything looks fine. The elevated d dimer will stay a mystery for now. Not knowing almost feels worse than an early blood clot warning but I will leave it with my doctor for now.
