Golden Gate Park Botanical Garden

Accessible: mostly

This huge garden was impressive even with it being winter still. It covers a lot of ground and is divided into multiple smaller gardens representing different temperate regions from around the world. It’s possible to see plants from Asia from the comfort of a pagoda or relax under redwoods. Open spaces of lawn are also around entrances.

There is a small gift shop with various merchandize and plants. A botanical library is also across from it. Other than that, everything is outdoors. The majority of the main paths between garden segments are paved nicely however some areas have different kinds of pathway ranging from boardwalk to compact dirt. I didn’t find personal difficulty navigating any of this if I took certain areas slow. If a person has an issue with bumps while being in a wheelchair however, it’s best to avoid these alternative paths. There are a few trails with steps but as far as I can tell, there’s always an alternative path to wherever it leads to. The only other issue is when they close for the day they lock all entrances INCLUDING all typical exits. Even the after hours exit was locked. All that was left was a turnstile to exit. There was no announcement for closing either. If my chair had been any longer or the turn radius any tighter, I’m not sure I could have exited. I also required a friend to turn it for me as I went through. No staff appeared to be nearby either. If I had been solo, I most likely would have had to call non emergency for help or had to try to flag down a passing person.

In conclusion, this is a wonderful place to spend a few hours and likely becomes even more pretty around spring. It’s mostly accessible with a lot of beautiful landscaping. Just don’t get stuck in here after closing.
